Carcinogens in tobacco cigarettes

Posted on Saturday Jun 5 3:53:00 BST 2010
A new study conducted by the Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) saw 126 people who smoke daily, from four different countries, worryingly reveal that at least one US brand of cigarette contained higher proportions of major carcinogens and cancer causing agents than cigarette brands from other countries.

Dr Jim Pirkle, deputy director of Science at the CDU, said that it is known that cigarettes around the world vary in their production and ingredients, and that all contain harmful levels of carcinogens.  However, the study showed that tobaco specific nitrosamines vary from country to country, but that the US brands were highest in this particular study.

The scientists looked at the 126 smokers over 24 hours, and examined the level of nitrosamines in the butts.  In this way they could tell how much went into the smoker's bodies through their mouths.  This was then measured in the participants urine.

The other countries cigarettes tested in the study were from Australia, Canada and the UK.

If ever there was a better time to try the electronic cigarette, it must be now, after results such as these.  Many many former smokers have found that the e-cigarette has changed their lives, either in being able to quit smoking altogether, or at the very least to substantially to cut down their tobacco.
