Spin surrounding the e-cigarette

Posted on Friday Jul 9 2:44:00 BST 2010
Both sides in the current debates about electronic cigarettes sometimes have vested interests.

Many of the reviews you might read regarding how successful people have been in giving up smoking with the help of e-cigs actually work for companies that sell these products.  Although what they say may well be true, and they have in fact been able to stop smoking and now only use e-cigs, and they do feel healthier and are able to breathe more easily, it is difficult to feel entirely easy with these reports when the person in question is actually being paid by the electronic cigarette industry.

Those who say that the e-cig cannot be classified as a smoking cessation device are right, in that it has not been approved as such by relevant authorities, even though there is much evidence that it can be used successfully in this way.

There are many who want the e-cig to be classified  as a drug delivery device.  This is something that e-cigarette businesses want to avoid at all costs because it would probably mean that the e-cig would have to be withdrawn until comprehensive testing was done to discover the long and short term safety of the e-cig.

The withdrawal of e-cig, even if only on a temporary basis would no doubt please the tobacco industry.  News of the e-cigarette, although spreading fairly steadily, is definitely making some inroads into the sales of tobacco.  Obviously smoking bans are also not helping sales either, but the tobacco giants will do everything they can to make sure e-cigs do not become the first choice for smokers.

There is much industry spin on both sides of the argument, and although the e-cig certainly does not contain tobacco, tar or many of the dangerous carcinogens found in traditional cigarettes, it does still contain nicotine.  The question is whether or not nicotine on its own is a health hazzard or whether it is something that on its own is fairly harmless.
