Articles relating to the electronic cigarette abound on the internet, and, as with most things, human beings have VERY diverse opinions.
One thing that most people agree on is that smoking tobacco is a danger to health. However, one blogger has recently and vehemently stated that anti-smokers are guilty of fraud when they say that the ingredients of a tobacco cigarette cause cancer. This is obviously an extreme view.
In opposition to this idea, another blogger says that the ongoing debate about lack of research into the e-cig as an alternative to tobacco, claims that the research may not be necessary, for two reasons.
The first reason being that the ingredients of the e-cig have already been approved for human consumption. For instance no significant health issues have been reported from the inhalation of propylene glycol. Also any flavouring used are food flavourings and therefore approved too. Nicotine is a legal substance with low associated health risks. So why would these ingredients when combined into the e-cig pose any great health risk?
Secondly, e-cigs are not intended to treat any disease. If it were intended for this purpose then they should be properly tested. However, it does not take a genius to work out than even if the e-cig contained half of the toxic chemicals which are present in tobacco (they actually contain hardly any) they must be a safer alternative.
E-cigarette manufacturers should certainly disclose their ingredients and give a warning about nicotine if it is swallowed. They should also be packed in child-resistant packages, but requiring further extensive studies seems to be unreasonable.
